The University of Oxford is at the forefront of medical research. Its Medical Sciences Division achieved top scores in the 1996, 2001 and 2008 HEFCE research assessment exercises. In 2014, the Research Excellence Framework (REF) confirmed the University’s world-leading position in medical sciences research.

World-leading research

In REF 2014, Oxford ranked top in: clinical medicine; public health, health services and primary care; and in psychology, psychiatry and neuroscience. In addition, it  produced the largest volume of world-leading and internationally excellent research within biological sciences. (More about REF 2014)

Facilities

Research activity is based within a number of research institutions with state-of-the-art facilities, as well as in specialty-based units with excellent links to larger research groupings across the Division.

The NHS Trusts and the University have been engaged in a wide-ranging capital building programme. This is to ensure state-of-the-art facilities for research and patient care, and fulfil the vision to foster healthcare innovation locally, nationally and globally.

Departments

The University's Medical Sciences Division encompasses an impressive range of departments and institutes delivering cutting-edge research and teaching.

The explosion of interest in interdisciplinary research has brought about exciting new opportunities, such as the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IBME), and new doctoral training centres (DTCs) which bring medical and physical sciences research together. They include the Life Sciences Interface, the Systems Biology DTC, and the newly funded Systems Approaches to Biomedical Science Industrial Doctorate Centre.

Clinical Training

The University, along with the Oxford Deanery, is committed to providing excellence in medical education and clinical training. The opportunities for Oxford medical trainees to experience research and bring a strong clinical perspective to the research agenda are wide-ranging and encouraged.
