Global surgery and surgical education research
Project researcher: Dr Sharaf Sheik-Ali, Academic Foundation Doctor
During his AFP, Sharaf was involved in a number of projects.
His main project was based in the NDORMS global surgery unit led by Chris Lavy. He worked on analysing the health care determinants of clubfoot management in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMIC’s). His follow-on project looked at the role of clubfoot training programmes as a means to bridge the training gap between LMICS and the rest of the world. The project team published ‘The role of clubfoot training programmes in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review, with Sharaf as a first author.
Sharaf’s secondary project was based in the Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health. Here, he looked at the role of virtual reality and augmented reality in surgical and patient education – an area of particular interest and increasing importance. This was a two-part project; the first was a literature review and the second involved discussion with industry on designing VR tool kits for surgical and patient education.
