High-fidelity simulation for medical education
Project Researcher: Dr Steven Alderson, Academic Foundation Doctor
Steven’s main research project whilst at Oxford has been centred around the use of high-fidelity simulation in post-graduate medical education, particularly with regard to training in the management of medical and surgical emergencies. In Foundation Year (FY1), he helped to develop a simulated on-call for new FY1 doctors, based at the Oxford Simulation, Training, & Research (OxSTaR) Centre. In FY2, he led the development of a simulated surgical emergencies training programme for FY1 doctors, and this was shortlisted for a Health Education England ‘Better Training Better Care’ award.
Aside from such work in medical education, Steven has been involved in a number of complementary projects, including a study of contrast-induced nephropathy in intensive care unit (ICU) patients; an audit of pain assessment in ICU patients, which was presented internationally; and a literature review on the issue of unrecognised pain in ICU patients, which was published in a peer-reviewed journal.
