Causes of common mental illness in late-life
Project Leader: Dr Charlotte Allan, NIHR Clinical Lecturer
Charlotte’s research focuses on the causes of common mental illness in late-life, and investigates the associated brain abnormalities. She is currently using multi-modal magnetic resonance imaging to investigate whether life-time risk factors change brain structure and function, making people more vulnerable to depression and dementia. Through doing this she hopes to identify modifiable risk factors for mental illness, to inform strategies for prevention on a population and individual level. Charlotte’s work spans the disciplines of epidemiology, psychiatry and neuroscience, and involves close collaboration between the Department of Psychiatry in Oxford, and the Whitehall II Study at UCL.
