Our newly launched Health and Care Professional (HCP) Local CL programme supports post-doctoral HCPs by guaranteeing 50% dedicated, protected time for their academic research. This enables them to develop as independent research leaders whilst working also 50% time in NHS clinical practice.

OVERVIEW

In partnership with the NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), Blood and Transplant Research Unit (BTRU) and Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUHT), OUCAGS has appointed the first Health and Care Professional (HCP) Local Clinical Lecturers.

Health and Care Professionals (HCPs) such as nurses, midwives, allied health professionals, pharmacists, and healthcare scientists play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality, evidence-based healthcare. However, it is exceptionally challenging for HCPs to pursue clinical-academic research careers because unlike clinical academic medical doctors, HCPs do not have a fully comparable clinical academic pathway. This impacts significantly on their ability to develop their academic research interests and progress to becoming independent principal investigators leading their own research groups whilst at the same time working clinically in the NHS.

The HCP Local CLs are two years in duration with 50% time spent in doing post-doctoral research and 50% in NHS clinical practice within OUHT. The protected research time can be organised flexibly (e.g. split weeks, continuous blocks of time) in negotiation with NHS line-management. This allows our HCP Local CLs to plan their research and clinical work in the way that works best for them.

What we offer

Our HCP Local CLs benefit from:

  • the excellent, stimulating and multidisciplinary training environment at Oxford;
  • an academic training programme director (an Oxford senior academic HCP) in addition to an academic supervisor/head of department;
  • funding towards conference-related expenses (attending, travelling, living, etc.) £1,000 per year in post;
  • funding towards research-related courses - £2,500 per CL post (pro rata);
  • funding advice and support through OUCAGS, including internal funding schemes to support career development (more about internal research funding);
  • advice on start-up funding. 

Who is eligible

The scheme is closed currently for new applications - please check availability every year.

Posts are open to all HCPs employed in OUHT (minimum 0.5FTE)

Candidates must be post-doctoral or have submitted their doctoral thesis at the time of applying

HCPs must have full support from their NHS line manager for a 0.5FTE secondment to the University whilst in post
