Project leader: Dr Chris McKinnon, Clinical Lecturer

Chris’ research focuses on developing novel techniques to improve the extent and safety of resection for patients undergoing surgery for intrinsic brain tumours, such as glioblastoma. Current surgical practice relies heavily on pre-operative imaging and intraoperative neuropathology smear analysis, both of which have significant limitations. Chris’ work aims to improve this by developing a rapid mass spectrometry tool capable of accurately classifying and differentiating brain tumour tissue during surgery. This work involves close collaboration between neurosurgeons, neuropathologists, physical chemists, and data scientists.

Alongside this, Chris is Co‑Chief Investigator of RECURRENT‑GB. This is a new multicentre, NIHR-funded randomised controlled trial investigating the role of repeat surgical resection in patients with recurrent glioblastoma.
