PATHWAY TO A CLINICAL LECTURESHIP 

I became interested in research during my undergraduate studies. I got involved in different types of research and thoroughly enjoyed it. I completed an academic clinical fellowship in Oxford and then completed my DPhil. I was then awarded an NIHR academic clinical lecturer in general surgery and this was followed by a CRUK Clinician Scientist Fellowship.

The clinical lecturer role requires careful time management skills to balance clinical and research priorities. This can be demanding and challenging at times, but I have found the role to be rewarding and satisfying too. 

During my career journey I have experimented with a number of different approaches to balancing clinical and research time. I currently undertake periods of full-time clinical training and full-time research and have found this to work well for the type of research that I am undertaking. Oxford has a wealth of opportunities for research training and I have found these to be most helpful. My role also allows me to be involved in undergraduate teaching, which I find particularly enjoyable.

My experience as a clinical lecturer has reaffirmed my career motivation to work an academic clinician.

I chose Oxford due to its international reputation for research excellence. During my time here, I have had the opportunity to learn and collaborate with leaders in my field. I have met many supportive mentors and like-minded individuals who have helped me to fulfil my research goals.
